Marlins pitcher Edinson Volquez needs Tommy John surgery

Edinson Volquez’s season is not only over, but he will need Tommy John surgery, Marlins president of baseball operations Michael Hill said Tuesday.

The Marlins pitcher will also need surgery on his left knee, further putting in question his availability for the first half of the 2018 season.

Volquez, who has thrown the only no-hitter in MLB so far this season, has not pitched in a game since July 5 when he allowed four runs in four innings of work. Manager Don Mattingly revealed at the time that Volquez was lifted due to a lingering knee injury but he expected the right-hander to be ready after the All-Star break.
